The Story Behind BuildProjex

Progress in the constantly changing fields of construction and project management is fuelled by innovation. And the senior management team combined with the software developers are firmly focused on supporting the UK builder with the best possible software tools.

BuildProjex started its development journey back in 2020. The aim was to develop a tool that would provide builders, project managers, and other construction industry professionals with a complete task and project management solution customised to meet their specific requirements. They were spurred on by the fact that nothing else quite like it existed here in the UK for small to medium-sized building companies.

The investment into BuildProjex

BuildProjex’s creation took off during the COVID-19 pandemic at a time when face-to-face contact was either prohibited, or difficult. BuildProjex is a cloud-based solution that keeps communications alive remotely. The software opens up online communications between builders and their clients and builders and their sub-contractors.

Not surprisingly, BuildProjex caught the attention of important collaborators who saw its potential to transform project management in the construction sector. These included the HM Government through Innovate UK, the West of England Combined Authority (WECA), and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Who wouldn’t be excited by an inexpensive, easy-to-use software that centralises project management? It allows the creation of teams, setting permissions, and sharing essential project details like calendars, Gantt charts, tasks, messages, and files. This approach ensures everyone involved in a project is on the same page, improving communication and efficiency in construction projects.

HM Government

In the early stages of development, the funding of BuildProjex by the Government via Innovate UK demonstrated a wider commitment to promoting innovation and propelling economic growth on a national scale. Innovate UK is the United Kingdom’s innovation agency, which provides money and support to organisations to make new products and services. The future of many industries, including construction (which contributes 9% of GDP), is significantly shaped by the government’s backing of programs that foster technical innovation and increase productivity. Innovate UK funding aims to improve productivity and keep construction an operational industry, which is mostly (99%) composed of SMEs (small and medium enterprises).

West of England Combined Authority (WECA) supported by the European Regional Development Fund ERDF

WECA first provided the funding via the Business Innovation Fund for the creation of the base platform with a focus on Health and Safety so that documents from HBXL’s Health & Safety Xpert can be shared across the construction team via BuildProjex. As a regional powerhouse, WECA promotes prosperity and economic progress throughout the West of England. WECA has emerged as a major driver of innovation and growth in the area through wise investments and cooperative projects.

The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), one of the structural funds of the European Union, aims to foster cohesiveness and economic progress in regional development projects. Its support of BuildProjex, partially through the Business Innovation Fund, demonstrated its encouragement to long-term growth in the building sector.

After intensive testing, BuildProjex was launched in April 2024. And we’ve never looked back!

What’s next for BuildProjex?

We’re expanding the platform for another update with further Innovate UK Fast Start funding. This will enable the research and development of our CAD and estimating features.

A key area of focus is the retrofit sector, where the enhanced CAD and estimating tools will be particularly beneficial. These tools allow for accurate modelling and cost estimation of retrofitting projects, which often involve complex modifications to existing structures.
