How to adapt or pivot your building business

Is it time for something different for your building firm? Perhaps what you’re doing up to now isn’t working as well as it used to? The industry is changing. We don’t think the construction sector has never been more competitive than it is now. Adapting and even pivoting, could be exactly what your business needs.

Maybe it’s about going from joinery to building extensions. Or focussing on new builds. Perhaps you could offer Design as well as Build. It could simply mean a reset to see where you’re leaking money and how you could make the money you really deserve.

Whatever your challenge, HBXL can help. On this page we’ve brought together free courses, advice, videos, and downloads to get you on your way. You need to stay ahead of the game. And this is where you can start.

How not to be left behind by your competition

Going from 'standing still' to 'changing things up'

When you're slow to changeWhen you give things a shake up

What's stopping you?

If it isn’t broken, then don’t fix it, right? What if your business has some cracks, maybe even holes – and you just haven’t noticed that you’re leaking money. The thing is, the construction industry isn’t what it was five years ago. Customers’ needs are changing. The workforce is changing. Technology is changing. Sustainability goals will require new legislation. But it can be scary leaving your comfort zone. It takes a certain amount of self-confidence to adapt and even pivot. But if you stay as you are, your income will start reducing, your competition will steal a march on you, and you might not be a viable employer. But it doesn’t have to stay like this. And we’ve got lots of ideas on how you could adapt to change.

What does it take?

Open mindedness! You need to open yourself up to a plan. Identify the goal you want to set yourself or the issue you want to rectify. Recognise the need to move with the times. Accept that there’ll be temporary disruption. Go with the learning curve you’ll be on. Embrace technology. Acknowledge the need for improved processes. Remember why you started your business in the first place. Stretch yourself mentally, and make sure you have a support network close to hand. Change might be coming through choice or by necessity. Pivoting might be the only way forward. Just remember what American entrepreneur Jim Rohn said, “Your life does not get better by chance; it gets better by change.”

What does a business that has adapted look like?

Look at him. Enjoying his success. It’s said that adaptable people see opportunity where others see failure. His business wasn’t going anywhere. The order book was light. He was spending more money than he was making. He could have stayed as he was, stagnating. But instead he moved on. He pivoted. He took advice. He rebranded his business, he spent time on marketing his business. He learnt how to design extensions using CAD software, he found a whole new target market wanting a one-stop shop. And now he’s always on the look out for improvement, adapting and learning. Choosing to change isn’t an easy one, however neither is the choice to remain the same.
