For builders who mean business: a step-by-step framework
Saturday, June 16th, 2018
You have a skill. The requests come in. You’re building a reputation. Your popularity has turned into a business. And now you’ve got more to think about. There’s quoting, cash flow, staff-cum-subbies, and compliance to deal with. You’re also competing with outfits ten times your size, all while trying to get on with the actual job.
This is exactly why HBXL created the Builders who mean business Framework. It isn’t a single event or a one-off course. It’s an ongoing mission to help builders close the gap between being brilliant at the trade and feeling confident running the business behind it.
This guide sets out the framework behind that mission. Below, you’ll find out who it’s for, why it exists, and seven practical steps for getting real value from it.
Who is ‘Builders Who Mean Business’ for?
Builders who mean business is not for everyone. And you’ll soon know if this is for you. A lot of it is about your mindset and whether you’re open to new ideas.
You’re probably running a building or trades business either solo or with a small team around you, either employed or sub-contracted. You’re proud of your work, but the admin side, not so much. Plus, the admin is eating into your evenings, and your weekends, and your holidays. You’re quoting jobs on gut feel and hoping the numbers work out. You’re not used to managing people. And you’re watching bigger competitors win contracts that, on paper, you should be winning too.
Sound familiar? Then this mission was built with you in mind. It’s not for people in a race to the bottom. If you’re happy with cheap equalling plenty of work, we’re not going to get on! If you were looking for a ‘make me a millionaire’ scheme, we’re not your guys. This is for builders who want practical, usable help and are prepared to put in a shift to create a sustainable, profitable business.
Why was the framework introduced?
The construction industry (or the economy) isn’t making life easy right now. Margins are tight. Good labour is hard to find and even harder to keep. Clients expect speed and value for money (or worse, cheap work). On top of that, small firms are competing against larger companies with dedicated estimating teams, project managers, and finance staff. No wonder so many skilled tradespeople feel like they’re constantly playing catch-up on the business side.
And another thing… the construction industry is focused on attracting the next generation through expanded apprenticeship schemes – and that’s great. But there’s a parallel challenge: the builders already out there are running the small businesses that the apprentices are supposed to be signed up to – we need those businesses to stay in business, to help give those trainees a future.
HBXL exists to correct that balance. Our belief is simple: a builder can’t become an accountant, a project manager, and a salesperson overnight just because the business grew. Builders need relevant, specific training, tools, and support to help them work profitably, efficiently, effectively – and be there long term.
That’s the gap Builders who mean business fills.
The Four Pillars
Everything within the framework stems from four connected pillars. This is your complete support system.
Skills Academy Practical, no fluff training designed around real building businesses, not classroom theory. Courses include fully funded Skills Bootcamps, CITB courses, and short on-demand modules.
Smart Software Practical, user-friendly business-changing digital tools for today’s busy builder. Tools that automate the admin that eats your time. Solutions that enhance your offering so profit comes more easily. Think quoting, planning, and the day-to-day processes that used to mean hours in the evening and create distractions in the day.
Estimating Service For when you simply need the quoting taken off your plate altogether. Our professional estimating service improves your chances of quality work, and hands back the time you need to focus on the job itself.
Human expertise Software support. Skills Academy support. Estimating support. Real people who understand construction, working alongside the tools and training. Software and courses are powerful, but they don’t replace the value of advice from people who’ve been where you are, and really know their stuff. You’d be amazed at the level of support and mentoring on offer from HBXL.
The seven-step framework below shows you what to do, one action at a time.
Step 1: Be honest about where the pressure is
Start by identifying where the business side is genuinely costing you – in time, money and stress. Are you struggling with pricing jobs accurately, managing a growing team, staying on top of compliance, or competing for bigger contracts? Most builders feel stretched thin across all of it. But there’s usually one area causing the most pain. Start there.
Step 2: Understand where we’re coming from
Watch this video to better understand what some building companies are getting right and how easy it is to get it wrong. You’ll hear how, by putting systems in place, you’re better placed to overcome inevitable obstacles. It’s an important 40-minute watch. Sit back and get in the Builders who mean business zone.
Step 3: Find out what training is funded
You could be forgiven for thinking good training is out of reach financially, or you simply don’t know what’s available. Our Skills Bootcamps are fully funded or 90% funded, and are available in selected regions. Our CITB courses are 50% funded and available across the UK to building companies registered with the CITB. So before ruling anything out on cost, find out what your business might already qualify for. They’re game-changers for just about everyone who attends. Then there are our on-demand courses that let you build new skills in the gaps: over lunch, in the evening, or between jobs – anything from Instagram to Asbestos training.
Step 4: Let software take the load off
Look at where automation can save you hours every week. Quoting, planning, health & safety, contract writing that currently takes ages, can be cut down dramatically with the right software. Get that sorted, and you’ll have more time for the parts of the business only you can do. What about introducing CAD skills within your business to give you a new revenue stream and new possibilities? Let’s talk it through for 15 minutes. You can book a call here.
Step 5: Hand over what you don’t need to do yourself
Not every part of running a building business needs to sit on your desk. The HBXL Estimating Service exists specifically so builders can hand over complex, time-consuming estimating work to people who do it professionally – and sometimes the simple jobs too – especially if you’ve got a holiday coming up. You even get a set of 3D models too, included in the price.
Step 6: Keep a real person in your corner
It would be great if you have a mentor – someone you can chat to who has valuable business knowledge – or someone who’s run a successful building company. If you haven’t, read on. An ongoing relationship is part of what makes Builders Who Mean Business a mission, rather than a one-off sales transaction. Our support doesn’t end when you buy or subscribe to our software – that’s just when it begins. The support doesn’t stop once your course is complete – we’re only getting started. You only have to read our testimonials to realise how much software users and course graduates appreciate the support they receive from experienced people who can answer real-world questions.
Step 7: Revisit the Framework as your business grows
Running a building business isn’t a problem you solve once. As the business grows, new pressures appear: bigger contracts, more staff, more complexity. That’s why Builders who mean business is designed to be revisited. We’re here for the next step as your business evolves.
What are the benefits of following this Framework?
By getting our help with training, software, estimating support and business mentoring, you’re going to see the benefits sooner. You’ll price jobs with confidence instead of guesswork. You’ll be able to win bigger contracts without feeling out of your depth. You’ll spend fewer evenings buried in admin, and you’ll get access to funded training that may have previously felt out of reach. You’ll build a business that can grow without you personally being stretched to breaking point – sounds exciting?
Above all, you don’t have to face the business side of building alone. That’s the entire point: HBXL on the side of builders, every step of the way.
Frequently asked questions
Is Builders Who Mean Business a training course?
No. It’s a wider mission that includes training, software, an estimating service, and ongoing expert support.
Do I need to be a limited company to take part?
No. The software is for everyone. The training is open to sole traders, self-employed tradespeople, and limited companies of any size. As you’d expect there’s some eligibility criteria when it comes to the funded courses.
How much does it cost to get started?
There’s no cost attached to the Framework itself. we’re not asking you to invest in some expensive coach-led programme. The Skills Bootcamps are fully funded for self-employed and sole trader businesses, with 90% funded options also available for small limited companies. The CITB courses are 50% funded. The on-demand courses start at just £25+VAT. Our software represents real value for money, and can be bought outright or on 12-month subscriptions. If you’re eligible for PayPal or Klarna, that will help spread the cost.
How much time will this take me away from the job?
Very little. We provide one onboarding session when you buy or subscribe to our software, and there’s someone at the end of the phone Monday to Friday 9am – 5pm to answer any questions you might have. The training is designed around two-hour time commitments, twice a week, plus some time for self-study. On-demand courses can be completed in the gaps around your working day.
What if I only need help with one part of my business, like estimating?
That’s exactly what we’re set up for. You don’t need to commit to everything at once. Many builders start with one software tool, do one course, or try out the HBXL Estimating Service, then explore other opportunities as their business needs change.
